Week 0 Recap

Well we made it. The Week 1 clock has begun and we're all fighting to get to Saturday again. Before we can look ahead to this week's match ups, let's close the book on Week 0.

FSU vs Georgia Tech

Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets started the year off with a bang by defeating the #10 ranked Seminoles 24-21 in Ireland on Saturday. Brent Key is no stranger to facing ranked ACC opponents and is beginning to build of trend out of it. You can get a feel for the culture he's building in Atlanta if you saw how dominant Tech's OL was against FSU's highly regarded DL. When interviewed Haynes King was about his business. "Hat on a hat" is what King talked about when asked what they need to do to win the game. He was exactly right.

Georgia Tech flat out punched FSU in the mouth at the line of scrimmage. Thanks to Tom Fornelli from CBS Sports the advanced stat below is proof of that.

It was clear during the game that FSU's OL could not get a good enough push up front to clear space for Williams, Lucas, and Toafili. While the FSU RBs still made some plays, they were boxed in a tight corner. DJ U's inability to throw ball down field was quickly figured out and led to Tech playing DBs shallow and gave them an opportunity to blitz a ton on 3rd downs.

Meanwhile we have been hearing how tough and ready this FSU defense is, but they didn't show it. The DL looked undisciplined and slow to get off the ball. A common worry when discussing FSU's defense this year was if Patrick Payton was able to perform without Jared Verse on the other side. Unfortunately for the Seminoles Peyton wasn't much of a factor only tallying 1 assisted tackle.

However, if I've learned anything from being a college football fan, you can't make year long decisions based on 1 game let alone a Week 0 game in Ireland! Don't throw out FSU just yet and don't be so quick to anoint Georgia Tech conference contenders. There's a long season ahead and both teams will have to play 11 more games. If FSU could figure out their vertical passing game and tighten up that DL, they'll likely still have an opportunity to compete for the ACC title. If Key and Tech can build off this big win, they'll get another chance to prove their status in the conference when they face Louisville in Week 4.

Yes. I did give out FSU -10.5 and it was never in reach but we're not going anywhere. As I said, the slate was small with not a lot of opportunity in Week 0 so it was more like a preseason weekend. Now that we've dusted off the sportsbook apps, we'll be returning to in season form in Week 1. Stick around and find out who I'll be picking this week. Fade or Follow it's up to you.
